What Cobra Kai Got Right

Cobra Kai is an American martial arts comedy-drama streaming television series and a sequel to the original The Karate Kid films by Robert Mark Kamen.

The hugely popular series is set 34 years after the 1984 film The Karate Kid, and in it Cobra Kai re-examines the “Miyagi-Verse” narrative from Johnny’s point of view, he decides to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and he rekindles his old rivalries.

Cobra Kai takes a lot of liberties to be entertaining, but here are five things the show actually got right.

1. Some bullies only respond to brute force. You should always try to use diplomacy and talk to your teachers and parents, but just know that with some bullies, they’ll never leave you alone until you show them who’s boss.

2. Don’t fight over girls or guys. If someone steals your boyfriend or girlfriend, be thankful. Not angry. Now you can find someone who’s truly loyal and deserving of being around you.

3. You need to develop your badass side. You can be the nicest person in the world and you should be, but you need to develop that little part of you that’s capable of inflicting pain on someone who wants to hurt you.

4. In a true self defense situation, you need to strike hard, quickly and decisively. Don’t be afraid to strike first if you feel truly threatened.

5. Remember that violence begets more violence. Nine times out of ten fighting won’t solve your problems. It’ll just create new ones. Save your fighting skills for those rare times when you really need them.
