How to Handle an Aggressive Person

Aggressive people are driven by ego. They want to be the dominant person. Unless you are prepared to physically fight (which you should never do for ego purposes), avoid the following:

1. Do not pretend it is not happening.

2. Do not turn your back on the person and walk away.

3. Do not use empty threats.

4. Avoid laughing in his face, swearing and using insulting or demeaning language.

5. Do not aggressively posture and make direct eye contact.

So what do you do?

  1. Realize that it is all about ego – do not allow somebody to use the letters of the alphabet to manipulate you.
  2. Assume a non-aggressive posture with hands above elbows and open palms facing the aggressive person (this is non intimidating but still allows you to block strikes).
  3. Apologize for any offense caused, ask questions aimed at how you can resolve the situation, or offer a resolution.
  4. If it does become physical despite your best efforts, protect yourself at all cost and attack until the threat is stopped. Then Leave.
