The Back To School Season is in full swing, and the excitement of a new school year is in the air. As parents we are poised to capture the excitement! But we want to remind you that, as you go to post them online, there are a few you should keep to yourself.
All parents want to take and share photos of their kids, which is understandable! We love our kids and feel proud of their progress and achievements. It is only normal to want to share that. But we urge you to be careful which ones you choose to share online. Put simply, some photos aren’t meant for the internet.
Online predators thrive on uninformed parents. Local predators love it when you make things easy for them by helping them locate ‘attractive’ targets. Predators think and act in ways your brain could never possibly fathom or remotely understand.
As much as we believe in the goodness of people, there are bad ones out there, and there are certain things you should try to keep from these “bad guys”. One of these things is PHOTOS THAT SHOW WHAT SCHOOL YOUR CHILD ATTENDS.
Yes, that’s right: any photo that shows people where your child goes to school should NOT be posted online. All of your friends know already? Sure, but the rest of the world doesn’t. And the rest of the world shouldn’t.
The reality is that photos don’t just stay on Facebook and Instagram, they also make their way to Google and Pinterest and all over the internet. They can go far, quick and you don’t want predators seeing specific location details of YOUR child in photos roaming the World Wide Web
Photos of your child in their school uniform are not a good idea on social media platforms, especially if you have a public account, and neither are photos that show:
The sign on the front of school buildings school notebook or folders, school badges, school event flyer, supply shopping list (this usually applies to the start of the school year), registration forms, school year photos and yearbooks.
So take as many photos as your heart desires, Back To School is exciting! Just remember to take a little precaution when you post them online and just how much personal information they reveal about those innocent little humans we are responsible for
If you really want to share photos of your child and they are in their school uniform, I suggest you at least try to obscure or blur telling details, such as school logos. Because one child is one too many.
