What your dog can teach you about self-defense

Here’s a common little scenario with an important self-defense lesson courtesy of our four-legged furry friends!

🐾

A friend of mine has a small dog, Max, who is only about 20 lbs . Max is a cavoodle and gets along well with bigger dogs. Before COVID, they were at the dog park and a bigger dog came over. He was a border collie who weighed maybe 65 lbs, and he went right for Max’s neck. Max panicked and took off running. My friend found Max hiding under a park bench at the other side of the dog park, shaking. Of course, the other dog was distanced and controlled by his owner and after a few minutes, Max was completely fine and started playing with the other dogs again. But Max reminds us that in self defense situation, your only job is to get away safely. You don’t have to confront your attacker and try to fight them. Sometimes that’s the worst thing to do! There is no shame in running away. You either take off running or you back away slowly, or you hit the other guy, and then you make your exit. Thanks to Max and all our furry friends for helping teach us this important self-defense skill. Because if it were my friend in a similar situation with a 2-legged attacker, we are pretty sure Max would not be interested in anything apart from his human getting home safely to pat him.
