Pros and Cons of a Pepper Pistol

 

PROS
  • Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) ingredient may affect attackers breathing, vision and induces coughing and tearing up of eyes.
  • OC can be delivered at a further distance than with conventional canister type pepper sprays.
  • Some models comes with a built in laser to facilitate more accurate shooting.
  • Comes with cartridges that can be replaced.
  • Does not rely on pressurized aerosol like pepper spray
  • Does not rely on CO2 cartridges like some pepper ball launchers.
  • The pepper ingredients are more gel like in consistency which means it is less affected by wind than conventional aerosol types of pepper spray. It has a rugged construction with built in picatinny rails which can be used to mount accessories like tactical flashlights.
CONS
  • Limited shots before reloading is required.
  • Each cartridge can only fire one shot so depending on the model you have, you may be limited to 2 or 4 shots before reloading is required. Cartridges are quite bulky which makes carrying of spare cartridges a bit of a challenge.
  • OC may not affect all attackers the same and it could be possible to continue an attack when shot.
  • Head shots are required for optimal effectiveness with OC gel which may be a challenging when used during an attack.
  • The platform and replacement cartridges are quite expensive.
