I Don’t Want My Child To Be Scared

When it comes to enrolling young children in our self defense and anti-abduction training courses, a lot of parents refrain for fear of scaring their kids. We get it – you love them and want happiness for them. But that’s exactly why you NEED to let them get scared 😱

We know you educate your children against potential dangers. You tell them not to speak to strangers, not to wander off and not to accept lollies from people they don’t know. That’s great. Children however, learn through experience. This means that, unless a child has experienced these encounters, they won’t generally understand the seriousness or repercussions of them – no matter how much you try to tell them.

Experiencing the build-up to an attack, even when it is artificial, can cause adrenaline, a freeze response, and a host of other reactions in children unfamiliar with aggressive language and behavior. These aren’t pleasant reactions for the child to feel or for you to see! But they are extremely important because you do NOT want your child to first confront these feelings when in an urgent or dangerous situation. We need them to have a default response that works based on their past experience! 👊🏼

That’s why our courses involve a lot of role playing, as you may see from the various photos and videos we post. Children get the opportunity to feel fear – sometimes for the first time ever – and learn how to cope with it. They don’t forget that feeling quickly – and that’s exactly what we are counting on 👍🏼

Practicing the correct response in emergency scenarios is an absolutely essential part to a child gaining and retaining vital self defense skills. It may literally save their life one day, but in the very least it will help your child’s overall coping mechanisms and emotional resilience 💪🏼

Inside and outside of COBRA courses, we encourage you to role play scenarios and teach your child to adapt to many situations and environments. This allows them to become more comfortable, confident, dynamic and capable of ensuring their own safety. It’s all about practicing in a safe and controlled environment to equip your child with an ingrained response that, one day, could literally be the difference between life and death.
