How Kids Can Fight Back Against A Bigger Attacker

Just one of the ways small children can be effective against big adults – their little fingers are great weapons in vulnerable places like the eyes!
When a predator grabs a child, the child is in the perfect position to poke, claw, scratch, gouge and aim at the attacker’s face and eyes, so it’s one of the techniques I love to teach and practice in COBRA™ courses for children.
I ask kids to think of the strongest person they know (The Rock often comes up, LOL). I tell them that this person may have big muscles, but they can never build strong eyes. So, GO FOR THE EYES!
Why is this so effective? Have a think about those times in your life when you’ve been incapacitated by something that got into your eye. Maybe you accidentally poked it or even grazed it. You are left blinking and miserable. Imagine the disturbance you would have if someone were to jab a finger deep into your eye socket as if to pluck it out. Disturbing image, admittedly, but in trade for saving your life, it is most certainly worth considering

Eyes attacks can immediately disable the attacker and help shift the balance in the victim’s favor, hopefully presenting you (or your child) with an opportunity to escape without harm.

Here’s a few ways kids can do it, which they love to practice!
Some are obvious, one even rather grotesque, but they do work:

SCRATCH: All kids know how to scratch. We tell them to go wildcat on the attacker! Long nails are a bonus, but generally just scratching viciously at an attacker’s face and into their eyes can be incredibly debilitating.

STRIKE: We teach children to hit the eyes with whatever they’ve got – a fist, palm, phone, drink bottle, umbrella, whatever they have that can intensify the impact. We tell them to hit hard and hit fast!

POKE: Yep. We love to see a good poke, and all kinds are fine! Kids can poke at the eyes with a finger, a bunch of loose fingers, a stiff jab of the four longest fingers, or the ever popular two finger “3 Stooges” style.

GOUGE: This is the worst, but very effective and something probably more applicable to older children who can structure their defense a little more. We instruct children to get their thumb positioned right on top of the attacker’s eye and press in hard! If you’ve seen enough action movies, you’ll recognize that done over-zealously, this can be lethal.

At the end of the day, I want kids to feel empowered to defend themself if they are ever in danger. I tell children that, if you are forced to fight, fight with everything you’ve got. Kids are often fighting for their life in these situations, and they have every right to give it 100 percent to get home safely
