EMERGENCY CALLS – AN ESSENTIAL PROFICIENCY

Many parents think their kids are familiar with phones, but this doesn’t necessarily translate to an ability to call for help.
I am frequently shocked at how many children who attend COBRA™ courses don’t know how to call 9-1-1 !
Most children do a great job dialing the numbers but freeze when it comes to giving the necessary details to the ‘operator’ especially when under pressure.
The who, what, when, where and why of emergency calls is one of the most important messages I share in children’s courses, as well as the act of PRACTICING making these calls
A call to police may be needed if your child finds themselves in a dangerous situation, but equally they may require this proficiency to seek help from an ambulance or the fire department; if YOU have a fall, or if the neighbors house is on fire, or if they have an accident riding their bike to school!
Quite simply, being familiar and adept with 9-1-1 calls gives your child the ability to save lives, be it their own or someone else’s. Official statistics show that more than 270 million calls are made to 9-1-1 every year in the United States. In fact, even children as young as 3 have managed to save lives through calling Emergency Services.
I’d love to practice emergency calls with your child because when children are armed with knowledge they can face a situation with confidence and action rather than fear and panic. And that could literally be a matter of life and death.
As always, remember that one child is too many!
